May 2, 1999       At approximately 3:30 in the afternoon, Kenneth Alan Strain was killed while returning Engine 232 to the station from an EMS call. As Ken steered the engine in an effort to give an oncoming vehicle more center-line clearance, the right rear tires of the vehicle dropped off the shoulder, and as the water shifted its' weight, the truck continued out of control down an embankment, causing the truck to land on its' side. Ken was instantly killed when the truck impacted a tree.
Ken is survived by his wife Sharon, and son, Kristopher. At the time of Ken's death, he and Sharon had been married 5 years, and Kristopher was 18 months old. Ken was co-owner of Neighborhood Automotive, a local automotive repair center. Ken had successfully trained and achieved certification as an EMT-D, as well as level 1 firefighter. Ken's call response was consistently in the top 10, during his 6 year term of serving Hemby Bridge Fire Department. At the recommendation of our chief officers, Ken's roster number 2328 was officially retired by the Board of Directors during the year following his death, and vehicle number "232" was  taken out of service by the chief officers the same year.
