Mid December 2006, Mike (Mikey) Watts was diagnosed with GBM (Glioblastoma Multiforme). Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and most aggressive of the primary brain tumors. The current World Health Organization classification of primary brain tumors lists GBM as a grade IV astrocytoma. It is highly malignant, infiltrates the brain extensively, and at times may become enormous before turning symptomatic.
It became apparent to all us who knew Mike, that early on he was having trouble with vision and balance. After the initial diagnosis, Mike remained in high spirits and hopes for successful treatments, but also openly admitted that facts caused great concern for him, and his family. Mike was optimistic that all things happen for a reason, and have an appointed season, and he would do the very best he could with what he had. This was also echoed throughout his family, and friends who assisted the Watts' when they needed care in the home, as Mike's physical abilities were increasingly challenged.
During mid summer 2007, Mike's health started a steep decline, and it seemed that he was experiencing more pain as time went on. It was discovered that tumors had spread into the spine, causing more and more discomfort, and anxiety to doctors, family, and friends. In late summer of 2007, Mike started experiencing the latter symptoms of GBM, and Mike was confined to the home, and mostly to bed. In early August, we received word that Mike's condition had entered the final phase, and notified of what could be expected.
During the afternoon of August 16, 2007 - Mike's battle was over, and his victory won. Those who wished to do so, were privileged by Mike's surviving family to say goodbye. With sad hearts, but with cheerful spirits, we said bye - for now - but not for good!
